Zero Waste is a concept that adopts responsible consumption , production and recovery of resources. The idea behind the zero waste concept is to ensure we consume less resources and leave no waste or discharge in any form that impacts the land, water and air.

We see multiple terms like eco-friendly, sustainable that are associated with the products we buy. It is nearly impossible to have zero waste. The goal is to get as close as possible to zero waste and eventually we’ll reach the point of zero waste.

Here as few things about the zero waste movement:
-If you refuse to buy products with wasteful packaging, their demand will decline
-By not accepting single use plastic, you save tons of plastic ending up in our waterways damaging our environment and lives

There are four levels of taking effective climate action.
1)At an individual level - Individuals being conscious of their impacts and taking climate action
2)Community level - Communities build low-carbon or green solutions to reduce emissions
3)Organisational level - Companies and organisation accounting their carbon emissions and taking responsibility to reduce while offset what they couldn’t change
4)Governance level - The government making policies to promote adoption of green solutions.

In this post, we look at three simple but effective ways in which an individual can reduce their carbon footprint.

Adopt car pooling with your colleagues/friends/family

If you can car pool for 50 kms per month, you effectively reduce 600 kms in a year. Equivalent to reducing 115 kgs of CO2 equivalent to amount of CO2 5 trees can take in a year

Compost your organic waste

If you can compost your food remains, you effectively reduce significant amount of methane gases being produced from landfills. Every 1 kg of food waste reduce CO2 footprint by 0.5 kg

Reduce your meat consumption

Adopt vegetable, plant-based diet whenever possible.
In order to produce,
1 kg of Beef = 60 kgs of CO2 is produced
1 kg of goat meat = 39 kgs of CO2 is produced
1 kg of chicken = 6.9 kgs of CO2 is produced
1 kg of vegetable = 0.5 kg of CO2 is produced

The climate crisis leaves us with despair, makes us anxious and some individuals feel like they can’t make a significant difference for this global crisis. Yes, our time is running out but ‘Hey! There is hope’

In 1985, the ozone hole was first discovered. During the early 1990s the world countries came together and signed agreements to ban materials that were leading to the depletion of Ozone. The Ozone hole has been Shrinking for the last couple of decades and it will completely disappear by 2030.

The same could be possible with the climate crisis. Being anxious and hopeless will not solve the problem but taking action will. We need action at a personal level, at a community level and at a policy & governance level.
The picture in the post describes where we’ll end up if we don’t take immediate action.With a 2 degree increase in Earth’s temperature it will be difficult to farm in tropical regions with frequent storms, cyclones and 36% increase in overall rainfall. With every half a degree increase the effects will double.

The term “Global warming” was first mentioned during the year 1989. Global warming means the long term warming of the earth due to human induced carbon emissions. It’s been 32 years we’ve known about this and we have been only increasing the amount of carbon emissions we put into the atmosphere.

Globally, humans emit close to 40 billion tonnes of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere every year right now. Carbon emissions are directly linked to industrial development and it started booming after the industrial revolution.

In 1900 we emitted 1.95 billion tons of CO2
In 1950, it was 6 billion tons
In 1980, it was 19.5 billion tons
In 2010, it was 33 billion tons
In 2020, it is close to 37 billion tons (Pandemic did reduce it significantly)

With business as usual, we’ll easily emit close to 1 trillion tons of CO2 in the next couple of decades. If we do so the earth’s average temperature will increase by 1.5 degrees leading us to major catastrophe.

Next time, a cyclone hits your city or you have a flash flood or when you feel the day is hotter than usual remember our actions were the cause, it’s not just our actions that make us suffer but millions of species that depend on earth as it’s home.

Imagine you are eating an apple, now for the apple to grow, it would require a certain amount of resources and for the apple to grow it, transport it and store it.

In order to grow the apple, some amount of fertilisers are used which needs to be produced in factories resulting in an amount of carbon emission. It needs energy to supply water to the plant and the fruit is transported through trucks and airplanes which run on fossil fuels. The Apple is then refrigerated, stored and displayed in a supermarket which consumes some amount of energy. The resultant sum of all this is given as the carbon footprint of an apple. Carbon footprint of producing 1 kg of Apple is 0.43 kg

A carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases (including carbon dioxide and methane) that are generated by our actions.

An average Indian emits upto 2 tonnes of co2 per year, a tree needs to grow 40 years to absorb a ton of CO2.

Globally, we emit close to 40 billion tonnes of CO2 which is the basic cause of increase in the amount of carbon in the atmosphere. The cause of climate change.

Not all carbon in the atmosphere is the same.

The carbon we breathe out, the carbon that is produced by organic lifeforms on earth is called Green colour. The carbon that we pump from the underground is called fossil or black carbon. The naming has nothing to do with the colour of the carbon but rather the property of it.

Green is good, it gives life while fossil carbon destroys it.

Our planet is stable and balanced if we have green carbon cycling into the atmosphere and being shared by the living organisms. The devil here is the black carbon that we pump into the atmosphere by using fossil fuels, burning the wood that makes the atmosphere unstable. This instability results in changing the overall amount of carbon in the atmosphere eventually leading to changing the temperature of the planet. The increase in the temperature leads to climate change.

We are a form of carbon. 18% of the human body is made out of carbon. The plants, the animals and fishes in almost every species on this planet is a form of carbon. Without carbon there will be no life on earth.

Carbon cycle is a biochemical in which the species on earth exist by exchanging carbon within them. Humans and animals breathe out carbon-di-oxide which goes into the atmosphere in a gaseous form, the plants take carbon from the air and convert it into food through photosynthesis with the help of sunlight, the plants and animals when dead don’t completely decompose and become fossils which are solid forms of carbon stored under the ground. Humans pump out the fossil stored under the ground to create energy in the form of electricity and fuels.

Carbon basically makes the species exist by creating them and keeps the world running through carbon cycles.
If carbon is good and it is the basic form of life, why is it the cause for climate change?
